evaluating IIS vs Apache on a windows hosting server

Hello everyone,

I'm new to this group, and I'm forced to get drupal 6 running on a windows server, I've tried the latest web package installer, unfortunately, it does no more offer to install IIS + php + mysql with drupal 6.

I've read somewhere that running apache under windows ( with wampserver, uniform server ... ) is not fast and secure as with a IIS wimp solution.

I'm mostly used to a LIMP solution under apache, so if you can please give hints, links or anything that may help solve any issues that may come up wih IIS , I 'll be realy grateful.

Thanks

Installing Drupal 6 on Windows/IIS

There is still Drupal 6 from the Web PI from Microsoft but it is the Acquia Drupal version.

Installing Drupal 6 manually is not hard. This article is a handy reference for configuring/managing/etc. PHP apps on Windows/IIS.

Any questions let me know.

Installing Drupal 6 on Windows/IIS 6

Posted by lan5 on March 12, 2011 at 10:45pm

I've used the web platform installer in
"http://www.microsoft.com/web/drupal" to install drupal 6 with IIS 6
now I need to enable clean urls,
I don't know the exact steps to follow to enable clean urls
I've installed Ionics Isapi Rewrite Filter, but doesn't seem to work

Can you move to IIS 7 ?

Installing to IIS 7 uses the native rewrite module in IIS. Both the Acquia and Commerce Guys builds include the rewrite rules in the web.config which works right out of the box.

btw, if you're just doing dev on your client I'd try using WebMatrix instead. Has a desktop IIS 7 web server and runs on XP. Just make sure your hosted server is running Windows 2008 Server. you can get it here, http://web.ms/webmatrix. After installing it start from the gallery in the tool.

hope that helps,

We're running IIRF as the rewrite tool on Win 2k3 on IIS6 and it seems to be fine so far.
We did find out to NOT install it at a global level though, and only apply it to sites that need it. It seems that a worker process was locking files and not releasing them if applied at the "Web Sites" level.
I don't remember what the rewrite set is that is posted on the IIRF site, but the one we've got seems to be fine, so if you need it, give me a shout.
Keep us posted with how you're getting on.

I've never used the IIRF but I did some searching for content that might be helpful in getting it configured with Drupal. I can't vouch for any of this content but it appears to be helpful.

thanks, I finally go it right after reading the doc.
just installed iirf .msi installer file and added an "Iirf.ini" file into drupal main folder containing rewrite rules , I 've found on a previous iirf 2.0 version zip file, most probably the same you provided on the link

Does anyone have data

Does anyone have data comparing stock drupal 7 on WIMP versus LAMP stacks on the same hardware?

Only perception, and only for WISP

Posted by brian.travis on March 10, 2011 at 1:44am

I haven't done any stress testing, but I was surprised how fast the combination of IIS and SQL were under Drupal 7. I would say that it ran 30% faster than a WAMP stack on the same machine. Again, it's only my perception, and perhaps it runs the same speed but I expected WISP to be slower. Either way, I was pleasantly surprised.

Is there a standard performance testing harness for Drupal? Perhaps we could answer this once and for all.

We have a free tool that can do this called WCAT.
