New to Drupal, would like a static site look and feel

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

I just installed Drupal 7 and after playing with it for a little while, I have tons of questions. I live here in Ames where you guys meet. Is there a good resource you can point me to to create a Drupal site that looks like a static site? Like on the homepage, I don't want people to sign in. I'd really like to have a static site look and feel for one portion, a blog on another portion, and possibly a forum on another. My current site (which needs help badly) can be found here. New drupal install found here. Let me know, and I appreciate the help.

Thanks!

You can remove the login box

You can remove the login box or limit it to certain pages in Blocks. To be able to log in you can always go to /user

You can specify a specific page for the front page in the Site Information area (in Drupal 6, probably in D7 as well).

Google a lot (the drupal.org search doesn't alway come back with the results you are looking for), come to the meetings, and if, you can, go to DrupalCon in Chicago http://chicago2011.drupal.org/. I learned a lot from the tutorials on lynda.com to get started, but it's not free unless you go to or work at ISU. There is also http://www.lullabot.com/

I hope this helps.
