Got CDN experience? Free lunch!

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

I have a project coming up with a significant media serving component. I'm looking to have a talk with people who have experience integrating a Drupal site with a CDN (Akamai, Amazon, whatever). I'm particularly interested in how you can restrict CDN access to authorized Drupal users only. I'd be happy to buy you lunch for an hour's conversation.

Hey, Keith. Great question.

Hey, Keith. Great question. Besides being something you need to learn about for a specific project, this would be a fantastic topic for a TC Drupal Users Group meeting. Sounds like maybe you have some confidential client info that may not be for public disclosure, but if this could be generalized I bet there would be a lot of community interest in exploring this. If someone has this experience (Andy?) and would like to volunteer to talk about this, let's get this listed for an upcoming meeting. Whaddya think?

P.S. In case you couldn't tell, I am not an expert in this topic ;)

great topic for meeting

I also think that would be a great topic for a meeting - along with that - when it comes to accessibility, I've found you can restrict access to even the content type or even field - I'm not familiar with the term CDN

CDN = Content Delivery

CDN = Content Delivery Network or Content Distribution Network. While not exhaustive, Wikipedia has a decent overview article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Content_delivery_network

The design scenario is a subscription-based media streaming service with a couple of different subscription levels. I agree there would probably be a lot of community interest in exploring the subject. A TCUG meeting devoted to the topic sounds like awesome idea Barry... as long as it's soon :-/

The CDN question. While nice, they are often not not needed

Obviously more details are needed, but CDN's have their place, and it takes a long time to get to that place. To be honest, hosting providers with good bandwidth are able to match CDN performance until they exceed the capacity of the providers network. You might want to have a chat with a streaming provider before assuming a CDN is necessary.

CDN's are typically used for offloading bandwidth and not necessarily enforcing who can get the content. Some creativity is usually needed to make it work as desired without spending a ton of money. Personally, I would start streaming with the resources you have and only go the CDN route when it is proven to be needed.

I would be glad to chat about this more sometime if desired.

Tag, you're it!

I knew you would weigh in on this, Andy. Any chance you're already on board for the TCDUG this month (Wednesday the 26th)? If so, we could make this the (or a) topic? Would that meet your time pressures, Keith?

Out of town

Posted by akay on January 13, 2011 at 9:27pm

Unfortunately I'll be at Lutsen skiing that day.

Later, then

Skiing? Likely story;) Let's say that we'll cover this soon, then. Either you, Andy, or Keith could report back to the group on this topic at a future general users group meeting. I'm guessing that Keith, you'll be learning quite a bit in your prep and implementation for your specific client. It would be great to have you summarize your findings and your decisions (as much as can be generalized) at an upcoming meeting. You can always add this topic to an announced meeting either in person or on the g.d.o-t-c event post.

I, for one, look forward to hearing more about this topic.
