Suprasegmental

Definition:

A suprasegmental is a vocal effect that extends over more than one sound segment in an utterance, such as pitch, stress, or juncture pattern.

In SIL contexts, suprasegmental is often used for

  • tone
  • vowel length, and
  • features like nasalization and aspiration.
