Double Stop

Definition:

A double stop consists of simultaneous labial and velar articulation.

Examples:

There are voiceless, voiced, and prenasalized double stops:

  • Voiceless: /kp/
  • Voiced: /gb/
  • Prenasalized: /Nmgb/ and /Nmkp/

These occur routinely in African languages.
