Summary of Changes
Hello @utkuakyuz, I'm Gemini Code Assist1 ! I'm currently reviewing this pull request and will post my feedback shortly. In the meantime, here's a summary to help you and other reviewers quickly get up to speed!
This pull request introduces a major refactor of the diff viewer components, driven by performance considerations. The changes aim to enhance the viewer's efficiency and maintainability by breaking down monolithic components into smaller, more specialized units and creating dedicated utility functions for various diff-related operations.
Highlights
- Component Re-architecture: The
VirtualizedDiffViewer
has undergone a significant refactoring, delegating responsibilities to new dedicated components likeSearchboxHolder
andVirtualDiffTable
to improve modularity and maintainability. - New Diff Utilities: Several new utility files (
get-inline-diff.ts
,get-inline-syntax-highlight.ts
,get-segments.ts
,segment-util.ts
,row-renderer.tsx
) have been introduced to handle inline diffing, syntax highlighting, and segment management, centralizing complex logic. - Performance Improvements: The recreation of the viewer component is explicitly stated to be based on "performance considerations," indicating that the refactoring aims to optimize rendering and diff processing for a smoother user experience.
- Dedicated Search Component: The search input and result display logic have been extracted into a new
SearchboxHolder
component, providing a cleaner separation of concerns for search functionality. - Virtualized Table Abstraction: The core virtualized list rendering, previously handled directly within
VirtualizedDiffViewer
, is now encapsulated within the newVirtualDiffTable
component, making the main viewer component more focused on overall diff management.

Code Review
This pull request introduces a significant and well-executed refactoring of the diff viewer components, primarily for performance improvements. The introduction of SearchboxHolder
, VirtualDiffTable
, and various utility functions has greatly simplified the main VirtualizedDiffViewer
component, improving modularity and maintainability. While the overall direction is excellent, I've identified a few issues that should be addressed. These include a critical bug causing invalid HTML rendering in the virtualized list, a high-severity issue with a utility function that leads to incorrect CSS classes, and several medium-severity items related to type safety, code conventions, and potential React performance/rendering problems. My feedback aims to enhance the robustness and quality of this new implementation.

The key for the mapped <span>
elements is {\
${idx}-${item.type}-${frag}`}. The
fragis a substring of the text. If the same fragment appears multiple times in the result array for a line, this could lead to non-unique keys, which can cause rendering issues in React. Using the
start` property of the item, which should be unique for each segment within the line, would be a safer choice for the key.
<span key={`${idx}-${item.start}`} className={className}>
We were using table elements based on json diff kit's viewer. However for virtual list of this kind, grid based structure is way more better both for style and dom manipulation

Code Review
This pull request is a significant and well-executed refactor of the diff viewer components, aimed at improving performance. The decision to recreate the viewer based on a more modern virtualization approach using CSS grid is excellent. The code is now more modular and maintainable with the extraction of SearchboxHolder
, VirtualDiffGrid
, and various utility functions. I've identified one critical issue regarding a violation of React Hook rules that needs to be addressed, along with several medium-severity suggestions to further enhance code quality, performance, and adherence to best practices.
