freeway-corridor-traffic-analysis

Pipeline for processing PeMS 5-minute station data and Caltrans lane closure records to analyze congestion impacts across LA freeway corridors.

Data Sources

  • PeMS detector station data (5-minute interval text exports)
  • Caltrans lane closure spreadsheets
  • Station metadata with freeway, direction, and postmile ranges

Methodology

  1. Aggregate 5-minute sensor feeds to hourly metrics.
  2. Build corridor segments using metadata and postmile ordering.
  3. Parse lane closures and expand multi-hour events into hourly slots.
  4. Merge closures onto corridors using freeway/direction, postmile overlap, and time overlap.
  5. Compare speed, flow, and delay during closure vs baseline hours.

Key Findings

Lane closures with higher lanes-closed percentage tend to correspond with larger speed drops and delay spikes, especially in recurrent PM peak periods.
