There is a lits of projects at http://gcc.gnu.org/java/projects.html .
In addition, there are many libraries that need to be implemented.
Most obviously we need a java.awt implementation. (There is the
beginnings of such an implementation, but nothing usable yet,
it appears.) There is no time schedule on any of this: The
goal at this point is to make sure Java in Gcc 3.0 is as solid
and usable as we can make it. So integrating tests into the
testsuite would be useful.
One project that could probably use some help is gnome-gcj
( http://sourceforge.net/projects/gnome-gcj/ ).
Another project is to build awt (and swing?) widgets on top of
gnome-gcj.
Note there is a competing project http://sourceforge.net/projects/java-gnome/
That seems to be more active. Somebody should evaluate these two projects,
and see which provides a better place to put energy into. Or it may
be premature - perhaps it would make sense to wait until gnome 2.0 is
closer.
