I've checked that patch in - its a trivial fix and gcj is completely broken
without it.

Not normal, but not uncommon. I don't usually make bootstrap, but I did notice
yesterday that the compiler was unable to build itself. Using the RH7 compiler I
got a gcj that seems to work fine.

libstdc++-v3 is scheduled to become the default soon, so it wont be an issue.

Sure - although I'm hoping that these iconv problems will be sorted out soon.
