The "buy the best you can afford and hold it for 5 years" trick works well enough for me.

My M2 Pro/16GB/1TB does well, and I use a Sabrent USB-C SSD drive thing for editing photos and videos.

I can only imagine what my MB Pro M7 Pro will be like...

    Z...

I've got 2x Belkin TB3 docks, and they churn out way more heat than you'd expect!
Like scorching hot and they have chunky external power bricks too.

    Badly designed cooling?
    Hot inefficient TB chips?
    Who knows?!

Apple's implementation of TB does not make their devices hot....

Yep, I'm with you on that :-D

Last time, I had to buy 2x M1 Pro 16" MBPs - one each for me and my partner.
    I got her 2TB.

It all felt very expensive at the time...

Given the prices as they are now, I should've spec'ed them up more LOL
    I should've just gone with M1 Max and 32GB / 4TB each :-D

The brighter screens on the new MBP 16" is actually something that is worthwhile to me!

Anyone know if the M5 Ultra is being announced in next weeks WWDC ?
I noticed on the Apple store that many Mac Mini M4 models, and Mac Studio models are not longer available, so I am guessing new models at the WWDC.

Not sure what the rumours are, but you'd have to imagine at some point this year....

However, Apple have cut some configs entirely, likely due to supply issues with RAM and SSDs.
(Apple don't actually say, as ever, but we all know that's the reason as they'd sell those massive premium high-end RAM configs to the AI crowd if they could)

The long delivery wait times have been going for the last couple of months, so aren't necessarily an indication of new models coming.

Blame AI and nVidia buying up all the production capicity!

Apparently with TSMC you can pay more to jump to the queue LOL

So who knows, maybe Apple has been getting bumped and can't release new M5 desktops as planned!

Same with their RAM suppliers apparently.

    Who really knows!
There's tons of news and rumours written about it all :)
