From German schaffen , from Proto-Germanic *skapjaną , cognate with English shape , Dutch scheppen , Old Norse skepja , skapa . Doublet of skabe . The sense "to serve, eat" is influenced by German Low German schaffen or Dutch schaffen (both of which are borrowed from (High) German).
