Latin
[edit ]Etymology
[edit ]Of uncertain origin. De Vaan tentatively derives the word from Proto-Italic *skeyp- , from a Proto-Indo-European *sḱeyp-o-, and connects the word to cippus ("stake, post") and Sanskrit शेप (śépa, "penis").[1] Others derive the word from Proto-Indo-European *skap- , and connect the word to scāpus , scōpa , scopiō , Ancient Greek σκήπτω (skḗptō), English shaft (in addition to cippus , though not शेप (śépa)).
