    Etymology 1

    [edit ]

From *bherH- , though the specific pre-form of the word is uncertain. It could reflect a denominative to a noun *bhorH-éh2 ("hole?"), though it theoretically also could continue earlier *bhorH-ye-ti, whence also Proto-Germanic *barjaną ("to beat, strike"). In this alternative scenario, the vocalization of the laryngeal would have created a Proto-Italic pre-form *foraō, whence the attested Latin verb.[1]

Cognate with Lithuanian bárti ("to accuse, scold"), Old Church Slavonic брати (brati, "to fight"), Icelandic berja ("to beat"), English bore .

      2. to pierce

O carnuficium cribrum, quod credo fore,
ita te forabunt patibulatum per vias
stimulis carnufices, si huc reveniat senex.
