[edit ]From Proto-West Germanic *agu , further etymology unknown. Possibly from Proto-Indo-European *h2oḱ-éh2, from *h2eḱ- ("sharp"); however, the variant *ag-ad- ~ *ag-at- perhaps points to a substrate borrowing, cf. *magaþ ("girl").
