From Middle High German anevāhen , from Old High German anafāhan , from Proto-West Germanic *anafą̄han . Equivalent to aa- +‎ fah .

  • ahfah/ahfange differs from Standard German anfangen in that it doesn't require z /zu .
  • This verb can be reduplicated by replacing ah with the infinitive (only when ah is separated from the verb), so one might see something like "i fa afa öppis mache" as an alternative to "i fa a öppis mache" (I start to do something). See the Wikipedia article for Swiss German.
