The Tamil people (Tamil: தமிழர், tamiẓar (singular) or Tamil: தமிழர்கள், tamiẓarkaḷ (plural), also called Tamils, Tamilans or Tamilians, are an ethnic group in South Asia, who speak Tamil as their mother tongue. The geo-cultural region of Tamils comprise the Indian state of Tamil Nadu, the Indian Union territory of Puducherry, or the Northern, Eastern Province and Puttalam District in Sri Lanka. The Tamils are one of the oldest civilizations in the world with a unbroken history of more than 2000 years. There are also a large Tamil Diaspora communities scattered around the world, especially in Malaysia, Singapore, South Africa, Mauritius, Australia, Canada, the United States, and Europe. The estimated population of Tamils in the world is around 77 million.
