No, they are not all synonyms but rather homonyms. Pleurotoma was used in the 1800s as a massive "catch-all" category for hundreds of different sea snails. George Perry described in 1811 Pleurotoma albida in the family Turridae. This later became a a direct synonym of Polystira albida.

In 1845, Charles Baker Adams described a completely different, much smaller snail also belonging to the family Turridae and also named his new shell Pleurotoma albida. This has now become an invalid junior homonym of Cryoturris albida, but WoRMS still regards Pleurotoma albida C. B. Adams, 1845 as an unsettled issue and gives Pleurotoma albida C. B. Adams, 1845 the status "uncertain - unassessed". This is adding to the confusion.

Cryoturris albida is therefore, in my opinion, a distinctly separate, valid species. It is not a synonym of Polystira albida. JoJan (talk) 12:24, 10 March 2026 (UTC) Reply

I see. My original reasoning was definitely wrong, but I still think it should be removed. Based on my understanding now, the three most accepted database for gastropods should be WoRMS, WMSDB and GBIF. And WoRMS is generally regarded as more reliable. However, someone else should be making these decisions. I am surprised there's not a detailed WP:NSPECIES I can refer to.

As long as WoRMS still regards Pleurotoma albida C. B. Adams, 1845 as an unsettled issue, we cannot regard Cryoturris albida as an accepted name or not. @Pppery: After I deleted it, I found out that this Pusia multicostata H.-J. Wang, 1982 is actually a homonym of Pusia multicostata (Broderip, 1836), itself a synonym is of Vexillum multicostatum (Broderip, 1836). I have send an email to WoRMS to signal this homonymy. The meaning of "at all taxonomic levels" is very unclear. The most obvious reading is that all taxa at all are considered, which is of course patently absurd since gastropods is included in larger taxa (the most diverse taxon is the one that includes all life at all). Hello, I have noticed your recent edits to taxa list and parent taxa in Fionoidea, Flabellinoidea and other related articles and taxonomy templates, where you rely on WoRMS as a reference for your changes. WoRMS as it currently stands seems to have many flaws at certain levels of nudibranch taxonomy compared to recent literature, flaws that are not retrievable in recent or even older literature, nor are justified by the articles they cite on each entry.

One of the issues is the name used for the suborders, ending in "-ina" in the database. Most of these suborders were introduced or rectified in Korshunova et al. (2025) but relying on the suffix "-acea". WoRMS cites this article on the page of those taxa, but the name it utilizes is ultimately original non-peer reviewed work and is not found, from what I am aware, in any literature, recent or less so.

On the issue of the superfamily Fionoidea, its synonyms, and what families it includes. WoRMS lumps with Fionoidea several superfamilies, which would lead to the inclusion of families that, to my understanding, have not been recovered together before nor are recovered in recent phylogenetic trees, not even the ones from Ekimova et al. (2026). Apataoidea, Cumanotoidea, Flabellinoidea, Flabellinopsoidea, the monotypic superfamilies (Notaeolidioidea, Samloidea, Unidentioidea) and Piseinotecidae are placed in Fionoidea by WoRMS. If you started on Fionoidea in the phylogenetic trees recovered by Korshunova et al. (2025) or Ekimova et al. (2026) and expanded it to include all these other clades, to keep it monophyletic it would include the entirety of Aeolidacea (except maybe two monospecific genera depending on the tree), including the very distinct Aoelidoidea, this latter one even recognized by WoRMS, no less.

There is also no traditional or historical basis for these claims, as pointed in Korshunova et al. (2025), where WoRMS is mentioned some 20 times: "it needs to be specially highlighted that the current system of superfamilies of aeolidacean nudibranchs employed in the World Register of Marine Species (WoRMS 2024) is inconsistent with existing morphological and molecular data [...]. One of the major inconsistencies is that a number of families that belong to respective phylogenetically clearly distinct clades and correspond to morphological aeolidacean super groups, such as Fionoidea, Flabellinoidea, and Aeolidioidea (Fig. 2), currently are chaotically scattered among the only two currently recognized superfamilies, Aeolidioidea and Fionoidea." They go on to comment on many of the specific cases.

My prediction for why WoRMS is in this state ties with Ekimova et al. (2026), where in their "Systematics" section they list "Superfamily Fionoidea" followed by their comments on all the clades their article is concerned with, independent of actual relation to Fionoidea. Fionoidea is not even mentioned further in the article. All the clades mentioned in the "Systematics" section are also clades placed in Fionoidea in WoRMS (which I have mentioned above at the superfamily level). Bouchet, who made the edits in WoRMS for these nudibranchs, is also acknowledged in Ekimova's, so it could come from close communications between him and the the research group or contact with the early manuscript. It most certainly seems to me a formatting error or from an earlier version. It's the only way I can see it.

According to this reasoning, I reckon the published results and nomenclature should be prioritized and would be very thankful if you could revert your recent changes to the nudibranch taxonomy. Thanks for reading. Sclerotized (talk) 22:59, 9 August 2026 (UTC) Reply

@Sclerotized:Thanks for your intervention. Since original work is excluded on Wikipedia, I had to rely on WoRMS for this major overhaul within the Nudibranchia. This is the first time in all these years that I have come across problems with WoRMS. I have to accept your reasonings as correct and will refrain changing these articles until further notice. Nudibranch taxonomy at this taxonomic level is practically fully updated by now on the wiki, but you are definitely free to implement changes to nudibranch articles, just try instead to rely on the publications I mentioned or other recent ones as references and means of confirmation, they should be accessible through the WikiLibrary.
