Origination and Evolution

[edit ]

Oakwright originated as the name of a fictional city in a homebrew D&D Campaign. The city was supposedly well known for being a port town surrounded by an oak forest. It's name is therefore based on Oak and Shipwright. The campaign itself was created in the fall of 2000.

The basic concept of the city and it's politics were converted into a Neverwinter Nights module. The server was cobbled together from spare computer parts in 2001, and built by the friends that created and played the original D&D campaign. The server suffered a major hardware failure due muddy shoes. It was eventually resurrected with spare parts and upgraded with donated parts.

Eventually the server moved it it's own domain, oakwright.org. After usage of the NWN server slowed the domain and website was repurposed to be a general 'geek forum'. When several members of the original group of Oakwright founders began playing Everquest 2, they created a guild by the same name (On the Kithicor server, which merged into Neriak). The EQ2 Oakwright guild is still going strong to this day, although the founding members no longer participate.

Several people involved in the various incarnations of Oakwright tend to use the name as a surname in video games. Most notably various characters played by Blue Sun use the surname Oakwright. It is most commonly used by the founders of Oakwright, however it is not safe to assume that anyone with the surname is one of the founders.

Blue Sun of Oakwright

[edit ]

The person that created the original D&D campaign had originally gone by the pseudonym of Blue Sun. The use of the pseudonym predates the usage in the popular show Firefly. It was actually created due to listening to the song "Stare at the Sun" by KMFDM while wearing blue sunglasses. Due to the heavy use of the name Blue Sun by Firefly fans, Blue Sun was unable to use the username on many new forums and webpages. Blue Sun adopted the name Oakwright and would use the forum signature of "Blue Sun of Oakwright". In time it would be shortened to "Blue of Oakwright", "Blue Oakwright" or more recently simply "Oakwright".
