My native languages are Mandarin Chinese and Shanghainese (a variant of Wu Chinese). My first exposure of English was standard elementary school curriculum, I then achieved basic fluency through internet.
I now live in an English-speaking country, I am probably more fluent in English than Chinese in formal registers.[citation needed ] My Wu Chinese had regressed due to lack of usage.
Top reasons I am pro-Wikipedia
[edit ]I believe that knowledge should be free
[edit ]I believe that academic paywall is an outdated and anti-knowledge practice. While not perfect, Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects provide free sources of information for learners.
I believe that knowledge should be accessible
[edit ]In some subjects at least, Wikipedia offers a relatively entry-level resource for beginners. In high school, I started my linguistics learning journey by reading Wikipedia articles because books and research papers are too "heavy" for a me at the time.
I believe in culture of civility
[edit ]In my experience, the civil discussions on Wikipedia is far more productive than most of social media (where people seem to prefer cheeky "epic owns.") I pledge to always be civil, even if not reciprocated.
I believe in respect of minority languages
[edit ]I support Wikipedia's respect to minority languages, shown by the existence Wu Chinese Wikipedia (my native language) and many others similar. This coïncides my belief that no language/dialect is "barbarian" or "inferior" on linguistic basis, such judgemental views is rooted not in linguistic phenomenons but the cultural associations of them.
