Company article advice

[edit ]
This is a WikiProject advice page on style. It contains the advice of one or more WikiProjects on how to format and present article contentwithin their area of interest. This page is not an encyclopedia article or a Wikipedia policy, as it has not been reviewed by the community.

This set of company article advice is intended to apply to all commercial organizations. This page sets out guidelines for achieving visual and textual consistency in company articles; such consistency allows Wikipedia to be used more easily and provides a structure for volunteer editors working on company articles. It also informs company representatives who may wish to propose changes to articles about their employer what types of changes are acceptable. While this guideline focuses on companies, its advice pertains, where applicable, to all articles that mention companies, and may be applicable to other large non-commercial organizations.

Article naming

[edit ]

Wikipedia articles about companies or organizations should be named using whatever is most commonly used in independent, reliable, secondary sources. A legal suffix is not commonly included in the article title, e.g. inc., plc, or LLC.

Article structure

[edit ]

Articles on Wikipedia typically include a lead section and a references section, at minimum. For topics under the umbrella of companies, a History section and a Corporate governance section (or similarly named section, see below) are commonplace.

The basic structure of a company article should follow the general format below. Not all section heading names will be used in company related articles. Headings may display in a different order or be used as subheadinsgs. Some articles may use different heading names than what appears below based on need. Always cite references.

Infobox

[edit ]

All parameters from Template:Infobox company are optional. Infoboxes should aim to provide basic details about the firms. Common parameters with less specific instructions include:

  • Key people
    • Not more than four (4) individuals should be listed
    • List prominent current executives, generally of the chief officer level
    • Include the individuals' title in parentheses () after their name
    • If more than one individual is listed, use the unbulleted list template to format entries
    • Individuals below the chief officer (CEO, COO, CFO, CTO, etc.) level should only be included if they are independently notable, demonstrated with a Wikipedia article about that person
    • If the founder parameter is in use, do not repeat the individual here with their title founder, however, separate executive job titles may be included
  • Products
    • A representative sampling of a company's production portfolio
    • Products should be tangible or digital items that are discrete purchases or subscriptions (e.g. tires, word processing software, frozen vegetables, cloud software)
    • Products listed should either be specific and independently notable (having their own Wikipedia article, e.g. iPad), or listed as more broad categories (e.g. tablet computer), but not both
    • Not more than five (5) products should be listed in the infobox
    • If more than one product is listed, use the unbulleted list template to format entries and list entries alphabetically
  • Brands
    • A representative sampling of a company's best-known current brands that differ from the company's name
    • Not more than five (5) brands should be listed in the infobox
    • Brands listed should be independently notable (have their own Wikipedia article)
    • If more than one brand is listed, use the hlist template to format entries and list entries alphabetically
  • Services
    • A representative sampling of services offered by a company
    • Services should be either discrete or ongoing offerings that are not tangible items (e.g. financial planning, graphic design, public relations, mechanical maintenance, legal advice)
    • Not more than five (5) services should be listed in the infobox
    • Services listed should be independently notable (have their own Wikipedia article)
    • If more than one service is listed, use the unbulleted list template to format entries and list entries alphabetically
  • Area served
    • Use the largest appropriate geographic area (e.g. Worldwide OR continent OR region etc.).
  • Owner
    • Include owner(s) name(s) and ownership percentages, if applicable.
  • Subsidiaries
    • The legally incorporated subsidiaries of the company
    • Not more than five (5) subsidiaries should be listed in the infobox
    • If more than one is listed, use the unbulleted list template to format entries and list entries alphabetically
    • If there are more than five (5) subsidiaries and they are also discussed within the body of the article, consider linking to the relevant section instead of listing
  • Divisions
    • A functional or operational grouping within an internal organizational structure
    • Not more than five (5) divisions should be listed in the infobox
    • If more than one is listed, use the unbulleted list template to format entries and list entries alphabetically
    • If there are more than five (5) divisions and they are also discussed within the body of the article, consider linking to the relevant section instead of listing

Images

[edit ]
See also: Wikipedia:Logos

Included in the infobox should be, as available, the company's logo and an image of its headquarters building. Throughout the body of the article, additional images may be used to promote understanding of the topic per MOS:IMAGE. Possible images to consider include: founding personnel, early products, current products, prior logos, manufacturing sites, current leadership, etc. Do not repeat images. Grip-and-grin photos are generally not appropriate.

Logos in particular may have additional permissions restrictions associated with them; check to ensure the logo is appropriately freely licensed or abides the rules for non-free use content.

Introduction/lead

[edit ]

The lead or introduction is a mandatory section. This section should follow the general guidelines for leads with some additional suggestions.

The first sentence should identify the company's full name and the moniker under which it does business (if different), in what country the company is located (or if it is multinational) and for what it is notable (e.g. the largest manufacturer of widgets in the world). Other attributes to include in the first paragraph may be type of company (e.g. public/private), and independently notable products or brands.

Subsequent paragraphs should summarize the most important points in the history of the company, including prominent controversies or negative events. The paragraphs should be proportional to the article body.

If the company is active, the final paragraph should identify key details about the company's current operations, including headquarters location, executive leadership, and if applicable, what stock exchange it trades on (with ticker).

History

[edit ]

All company articles should have a History section outlining noteworthy milestones. These may include: the firm's foundation, expansion into new markets or product lines, significant mergers and acquisitions with other independently notable firms or brands, initial public offerings, significant legal action or controversy, and other elements unique to the company.

Routine business transactions and news are not generally considered encyclopedic content and often should not be included. This includes: reports on quarterly financial results, software updates, changes to boards of directors, new partnerships or their renewals, stock performance, acquisitions of non-notable entities, and speculation on transactions/mergers/closures.

Information may be organized chronologically or by other major events as appropriate. Subheadings should be utilized when the section's content exceeds 500 words. Subheadings organized by year ranges or major milestone events are appropriate.

Corporate governance/Overview/Operations

[edit ]

Corporate governance, Company overview, and Operations are naming suggestions for a recommended section for active companies concerned with logistical details. The most appropriate heading will vary by company, but the section should include: company type, current leadership, financial information, headquarters location, number of locations, number of employees, and other details about the company which are largely located in the infobox, to satisfy the requirements of MOS:INFOBOXPURPOSE. Much of this information can be acceptably sourced to company websites or annual reports, such as a Form 10-K or similar document, per WP:ABOUTSELF.

These sections may also include subsections on brands/products/services, recognition/awards, marketing/branding, sponsorships/partnerships, and philanthropy, as sourcing is available. Alternatively, these subjects may warrant their own section headings if they contain enough content.

Defunct companies may or may not have a Corporate governance/Company overview/Operations section, depending on available sourcing.

Brands/Products/Services/Subsidiaries

[edit ]

These sections are optional. Brands, Products, and Subsidiaries sections should list brands and subsidiaries and discrete products manufactured by the company. Services offered should be listed in these sections as well, but should be broad categories (e.g. financial planning) rather than specifically named, unless the service is independently notable.

For brands, products, services, or subsidiaries defer to MOS:LIST, wherein prose is preferred when that format is easily understood. If the items on the list achieve notability on an individual basis or when grouped together, consider a stand-alone list.

Much of this information can be acceptably sourced to company websites or annual reports, such as a Form 10-K or similar document, per WP:ABOUTSELF, though secondary sources are preferred.

Marketing/Branding

[edit ]

Marketing or Branding sections are optional sections. They should include information about company logos, marketing efforts and advertising campaigns. Include this section if and only if there is significant third-party coverage of the marketing campaign or analysis of the company branding. Press releases, annual reports, and/or company websites are not sufficient sources for this information.

Environmental impact

[edit ]

Environmental impact sections are optional. This section may be appropriate if there is significant coverage of a company's relationship with the natural world in third-party outlets. Such sections should include both efforts undertaken by the company to reduce their environmental impact as well as actions taken by the company that harmed the environment. These sections should refer to concrete past events or initiatives reported in reliable sourcing, rather than potential future developments or goals for reduced impact, e.g. net-zero goals. Content should be specific, and in-text attribution to the source should be included when dealing with extraordinary claims, per WP:ATTRIBUTEPOV.

Appropriate:

[画像:check]Y In 2023, Widget Company launched a carbon sequestration initiative which included upgrading carbon capture technology in the smoke stacks of its factories. The Local Newspaper reported Widget Company was fined US2ドル million in 2024 by Government Agency for illegally dumping hazardous waste in the Named River.

Inappropriate:

[画像:X mark]N In 2023, Widget Company pledged to have net-zero carbon emissions by 2030. The following year, it was found that Widget Company was poisoning the Named River.

Awards/Recognition

[edit ]

Awards or Recognition sections are optional. They should include placement on notable lists (e.g. Fortune 500) and awards that are either a) independently notable (have their own Wikipedia article) or b) given by a body that is independently notable (e.g. Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences).

Awards should generally be listed in prose form. Long lists of awards may warrant the creation of a table. If the items on the list achieve notability on an individual basis or when grouped together, consider a standalone list.

Annual reports and/or company websites are not sufficient sources for this information. Press releases by or the website of the awarding body may be sufficient if the awarding body is independently notable.

Sponsorships and partnerships

[edit ]

Sponsorships and Partnerships sections are optional. They should include only those sponsorships/partnerships discussed by third-party reliable sources. Press releases, annual reports, and/or company websites are not sufficient sources for this information.

Philanthropy

[edit ]

Philanthropy sections are optional and should detail charitable efforts by companies. These efforts should be discussed only if there is third-party reliable sourcing to verify the information. Press releases, annual reports, and/or company websites are not sufficient sources for this information.

Community engagement/Social impact/DEI

[edit ]

Community engagement/Social impact/DEI sections are optional. They should include only those efforts that have been discussed by third-party reliable sources. Press releases, annual reports, and/or company websites are not sufficient sources for this information.

Other sections

[edit ]

Sections not covered

[edit ]

Some companies may be in highly specialized industries or have particular histories that necessitate additional sections not covered in this guideline. Editors should use their best judgment and when in doubt, be WP:BOLD.

Criticism/Controversies/Accolades

[edit ]

Company articles generally should not have Criticism or Controversies sections per WP:NOCRIT. Though once commonplace on Wikipedia, these sections have since become common problem points for the neutrality of an article. These sections generally are not about criticism a company has received or actual controversies and instead act as collection points for all content that could be construed as negative.

The headings Criticism and Controversy themselves carry with them negative connotations and pose issues of neutrality. Similarly, an Accolades heading carries a positive connotation and neutrality issues. Rather than have dedicated sections with these headings, the content of these sections should be integrated into the History or Recognition section or placed under its own heading if there is enough content to warrant it.

Appropriate:

[画像:check]Y 1904 labor strike
In 1904, workers of Widget Company went on strike in an attempt to secure higher wages. Widget Company responded by hiring strikebreakers to replace workers on the picket line. Protests turned violent when City Police became involved, resulting in the deaths of three protestors.

Inappropriate:

[edit ]

Legal issues or Legal cases sections should be treated similarly to Controversies sections. These sections also tend to collect information that is perceived as negative by both article subjects and volunteer editors, and rarely include resolutions. These sections should be treated with care, and generally integrated into History sections or placed under headings tailored to the action described.

Resolutions to legal actions often aren't covered by third parties with the same fervor that the initial lawsuits are; because of this, primary court documents detailing the resolution of lawsuits are considered acceptable sources for detailing the outcomes of legal action in the absence of third-party coverage, per WP:PRIMARY and WP:ABOUTSELF.

Sustainability/Mission

[edit ]

Sustainability and Mission sections are generally not appropriate for Wikipedia. Information in these sections is generally speculative and goal-oriented rather than dealing in concrete reality. These sections generally go against WP:NOTEVERYTHING, WP:CRYSTALBALL and WP:PROMO.

Financials/Board of directors

[edit ]

Financials and Board of directors sections and tables, though once commonplace, are generally discouraged, as they go against WP:NOTDIRECTORY and WP:NOTEVERYTHING.

Matters dealt with in detail elsewhere

Notability

[edit ]
Main page: WP:CORP

Articles on companies or a company's brands or products and services first need to meet Wikipedia's notability guidelines to qualify for inclusion in Wikipedia. Specific notability guidelines have been crafted for organizations and companies, usually abbreviated as WP:CORP. Ideally before an article is released into the main Article space, you should review it in the context of this notability guideline.

Reliable sources

[edit ]

Company articles should adhere to Wikipedia's general guidelines around reliable sources. Editors should be careful to distinguish away from trivial coverage, including standard notices, brief announcements, and routine coverage.

Both the author and the content of a source should be independent of the topic and sources from trade publications should be evaluated for independence on a case-by-case basis.

Dependent coverage includes press releases/kits as well as content substantially based on those releases/kits; paid or sponsored articles; and self-published material.

Article categories

[edit ]

There are various categories set up in order to help users navigate through Wikipedia, which should be added to company articles.

All companies

[edit ]

Year of establishment

[edit ]

[[Category:Companies established in xxxx]] where xxxx is the year the company was established.

All active companies

[edit ]

Company location (country)

[edit ]

[[Category:Companies of xxxx]] where xxxx is the country within which the company is based.

Company location (city)

[edit ]

[[Category:Companies based in xxxx]] where xxxx is the city within which the company is based.

Stock exchange membership

[edit ]

Add the article to the relevant "Companies listed on the . . . " stock exchange category.

If not already included companies listed on a stock exchange should be included in the [[List of members of xxxx]] where xxxx is the name of the stock exchange.

Industry

[edit ]

See Category:Companies by industry for a listing of the currently available industry categories.

Industry and company location (country)

[edit ]

See Category:Companies by country and industry for a listing of the currently available Industry and Country combinations.

All defunct companies

[edit ]

Year of disestablishment

[edit ]

[[Category:xxxx disestablishments]] where xxxx is the year the company was acquired or liquidated

Company former location (country)

[edit ]

[[Category:Defunct companies of xxxx]] where xxxx is the country within which the company used to be based

Former industry and former company location (country)

[edit ]

[[Category:Defunct xxxx companies of yyyy]] where xxxx is the industry and yyyy is the country within which the company used to be based

If the category needed for a particular country, city or industry does not exist it, feel free to create it so long as you follow the above naming conventions. Also note that these are the minimum categories as established by this task force, it is possible that other categories are added to a company article by other projects or random editors. It is important that these categories remain in place on the article unless their relevance to the company is questionable.

Article lists

[edit ]

There are currently several different lists within Wikipedia grouping companies by country, stock exchange, oldest etc. A discussion is underway on the talk page to reach consensus upon which of these the project should support/adopt. Please join the discussion and add your views!

Stub templates

[edit ]

Any article which meets the criteria of a stub should be tagged with an applicable template. Currently available stub templates are listed at Wikipedia:WikiProject Stub sorting/Stub types#Companies. If a new stub type is required it should be discussed at Wikipedia:WikiProject Stub sorting/Proposals prior to its creation

Article importance

[edit ]

There are custom guidelines in place to help you determine what "importance" to rate an WP:Companies article. Please note that importance refers to the company's or article's relative importance in the global economy, lifestyle, or a major industry. Importance should not be used to bolster visibility on Wikipedia for a gain or to promote products.
