Template talk:KIAA human genes

Currently, all of the genes listed in this template have had their symbols updated to something else. Since this isn't anything like a complete list of all 1873 genes that have a KIAA designation, should we just remove this template from the pages in question?

@Pabnau: I would support retiring this template. There are still 83 articles that start with KIAA (Special:PrefixIndex/KIAA). The template could be updated, but what is the point? The HGNC describes KIAAs as placeholder symbols that will be replaced with more meaningful symbols once the function of the gene has been determined. And BTW, thanks for all your helpful edits to the Gene Wiki (especially adding {{Infobox gene }} to articles that lacked the template). Highly appreciated. Cheers. That makes sense. Looking through, most of those seem to be redirects, but about 11 of those are real pages of genes which still have a KIAA designation as their HUGO symbol. As you say though, there doesn’t seem much point in keeping this updated. It doesn’t seem like people are going to be looking for those genes in a list about other KIAA genes, unless they’re just looking for any genes which we don’t understand well yet.

I’ll go through though the pages, and see if there are any suitable navigation bars that these genes should belong to now, but otherwise I’ll probably just get started removing the nav bar from those pages. Ok, I’ve removed the genes/proteins that no longer use their KIAA designations from the template, and removed the template from their pages. There was actually 1 gene in the list that was still using it, but the article name is different. I added the missing 11 or so genes still using KIAA designations for now because it was super fast, but I’m not going to add the template to their pages unless someone feels this template would be helpful Pabnau (talk) 21:14, 10 August 2026 (UTC) Reply
