Warning This template is used on approximately 2,900 pages and changes may be widely noticed. Test changes in the template's /sandbox or /testcases subpages, or in your own user subpage. Consider discussing changes on the talk page before implementing them.

Purpose

The Moved discussion to and Moved discussion from tags are related to Resolved , and are used to indicate when a discussion has been moved elsewhere. They are meant to be placed at the top of sections on talk pages and other discussions, and serve as a reminder for editors not to add any more to the discussion, except at its new location, unless absolutely necessary.

Usage

Place the following under the topic heading on a talk page:

Moved to Talk:Archive
 – JohnDoe 25 March 2025 14:04 (UTC)

If a discussion is long, it should be removed from its original location (except for the heading and this template) after it is moved, or at least archived.

Parameters

 • The first parameter is the location to which the discussion has been moved. Usually this is the full page name of the new location and should also include the anchor name of the topic as well if it isn't identical in both places, in the form Namespace:Pagename#Topic. If it exists, the page name will be auto linked. To use a section of this template's own documentation page as an example: Template:Moved discussion to/doc#Example:

Linking it manually also works, and is used for linking to an anchor on the same page, as in #Example:

Moved to #Example

It can also be used to provide a URL, but the parameter must be explicitly named |1=, or the = character in the URL will break it. This can be used to give a permalink to the discussion in question:

Moved to WP:AE request

 • The optional second parameter, |2= (AKA |reason=, |signature=, |sig=), is an additional comment explaining why the discussion was moved, and/or to sign so that others know who marked the thread as resolved. It is especially optional if a comment retained below the heading makes it clear who did the move and why. If used, it should fit on one line, and the explicit |2= or |reason= is necessary if there are any "=" characters in the message, for example if your raw signature contains the character, which is quite common. Example:

Moved to Talk:Article
 – Articles have been updated with 2007 data, and are now in sync. JohnDoe 00:26, 14 July 2005 (UTC)

 • The optional parameter |back=y will replace the wording "Moved to" with "Moved back to".

The corresponding would be placed under the topic heading of the discussion after it is pasted into its new location, usually with the same or a similar message, so that the reasons for the move are clear on both ends.

 • The optional parameter |moved= will replace the word "Moved" with something else, e.g. "Split", "Archived", "Partially moved", etc.

Example

At Wikipedia:Help desk one might use:

Question about turtles
Chelonia currently redirects to Turtle, but Chelonia is the monotypic genus
of the Green Sea Turtle. Shouldn't it be Chelonian→Turtle, and Chelonia→Green Sea Turtle?
– OneUser123 23 January 2025 05:08 (UTC)
:The Help Desk is for questions about using Wikipedia; this discussion really belongs on
Talk:Turtle. --AnotherUser789 23 January 2025 05:26 (UTC)
::I moved it. ~~~~

At Talk:Turtle, the corresponding section might look like:

Chelonia
Chelonia currently redirects to Turtle, but Chelonia is the monotypic genus
of the Green Sea Turtle. Shouldn't it be Chelonian→Turtle, and Chelonia→Green Sea Turtle?
