Cherokee or white

[edit ]

@Yuchitown and ARoseWolf:, I made an edit a couple of days ago when Kgriffin75 removed the source and info that said that Sanders is Cherokee. There are lots of sources that say that he's Cherokee. There were some things that weren't adding up for me, so I did some research. I found Sander's parents and a grandfather, also William B. Sanders. Going back several generations on the father's side, all the individuals were white. If he has some Cherokee blood, I think it must go back to the 1700s. Sanders is a common Oklahoma Cherokee surname [1] On the mother's side, they were also white, with some of the family coming from France. I am not finding another William Sanders, William B. Sanders, or William Baxter Sanders born in Arkansas in 1942. I guess there could be, but it seems unlikely.

So, I added the parents' info and that the family was white. I could go back several generations if that is helpful to show that Sanders descended from white people. I changed the sentence about him being Cherokee to say that he was reported to be a Cherokee man from Oklahoma - and I removed the Cherokee and Native American categories.

There's not a published secondary source that has done the research, so I don't know that Category:Racial impostors could apply. I will search for something where he says that he's Cherokee - I know he did a piece on being Native American, so I'll look for the language. When I find it, I expect to anyway, I think the self-identify category is applicable.

Just giving you a heads up to see if you have any edits for this - or thoughts. Once I get this one down, I probably won't need to check in with you if I run into another situation like this.–CaroleHenson (talk) 20:01, 1 June 2024 (UTC) [reply ]

I went ahead and made the change about self-identifying. I am troubled about his having been said to be a pow wow dancer and Cherokee gospel singer. I checked Oklahoma papers to see if there was anything in a local paper about his happenings with Cherokee people and I didn't find anything. It would have been better to have a secondary source for his connection to his parents, but I have looked and haven't found someone with his year of birth or family info that fits for Sanders born in Arkansas in 1942. There are other things that seem off - no mention of his parents, no record of him as a Native American, there's a description of him and the bits of language he knows with Cherokee at the end. I couldn't find information about his involvement with Cherokee people (like visiting relatives on a reservation), in a story he "altered details of Cherokee ritual tradition" p. 92 (but I don't know if that's out of respect for the tradition, or because he didn't know all the details - not anything that could be used - but interesting). I don't see any details of where he was a pow wow dancer or Cherokee gospel singer.–CaroleHenson (talk) 00:04, 2 June 2024 (UTC) In other words, there are no details about his being Cherokee.–CaroleHenson (talk) 00:42, 2 June 2024 (UTC) See Medium article, not able to use as a reliable source, though.–CaroleHenson (talk) 00:48, 2 June 2024 (UTC) [reply ]
By the way, see WP:Primary #1 and 3 for use of census record.–CaroleHenson (talk) 00:49, 2 June 2024 (UTC) [reply ]

Based on the primary source to dispute Cherokee heritage, removed the info about his family being white for generations and the mention of his being Cherokee here.–CaroleHenson (talk) 02:16, 2 June 2024 (UTC) [reply ]
