Requested move

The following discussion is an archived discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review. No further edits should be made to this section.

The result of the move request was: pages moved to Steve Smith (infielder) and Steve Smith (pitcher), respectively. For readers looking for either of these topics, this seems like the most effective disambiguation. Mini apolis 19:22, 23 June 2013 (UTC) [reply ]

– The articles as currently titled and hatnoted imply that the Steve of Steve Smith (baseball) is not a baseball coach when in fact he is. Both Steves had similar playing careers in that neither made the majors, but both are notable for their coaching careers. —KuyaBriBri Talk 14:40, 3 June 2013 (UTC) [reply ]

  • Agree that these need better titles, but the (baseball, born XYZ) thing looks kind of ugly, would using the full first name together with the middle names be better
Given that there are three players with similar names maybe use the freed up Steve Smith (baseball) as a disambig.--KTo288 (talk) 23:23, 3 June 2013 (UTC) [reply ]
  • No, sub-dabs / incomplete dabs (see WP:INCOMPDAB) aren't recommended, although a redirect to Steve Smith dab, or a section of it, e.g. Steve Smith#Sports or Steve Smith#Baseball is really useful. The page title here may look ugly to you, but it's the standard naming convention. Middle names are discouraged unless they're commonly known as that, mainly because it makes them more difficult to find. The user would have to know the person's middle name in order to be able to find the article first time, and that's unlikely. I support the new titles suggested by Kuyabribi. • Just wanted to point out that according to the Steven Smith dab page there are currently articles on American football, association football (soccer), and cricket players titled "Steve/Stephen/Steven Smith (__ born 19xx)". That is why my proposal went with the "born" convention instead of something else like "professional baseball coach"/"college baseball coach". —KuyaBriBri Talk 14:09, 4 June 2013 (UTC) [reply ]
