[edit ]"...following the military conquest of most of the new continent..."
"After the conquest of Mexico and Peru..."
The armies that defeated the Aztecs were comprised mostly by local indigenous enemies, not Europeans, resembling a civil war of sorts. In the end it was a lack of immunity to Old World diseases that wiped out a large portion of the native population, including indigenous allies, in the subsequent years and decades, rather than warfare.
It was these circumstances that allowed Westernized mestizos, who had better immunity due to their partial European ancestry and outnumbered those of European ancestry early in the colonial period, to thrive at their expense and gradually assimilated the indigenous populations across Latin America.
This was a long process and not completely carried out within the 16th century as after the fall of the Aztecs many indigenous populations dispersed across the continent were not under European rule, and remained autonomous for centuries after European colonization began and by then mestizos were the overwhelming majority of the inhabitants in European colonies. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 124.170.202.192 (talk • contribs) 7 May 2021 (UTC)
Total population section of the infobox
[edit ]The "pop" section of the infobox is a mess. Besides the haphazard formatting, it purports to give the total, but it doesn't. The largest number it gives, we find out in the next section of the infobox, is only the number resident in Spain. Then it tells us that there are fewer than 3 million additional people "of the Americas of full or partial Spanish ancestry", with, mysteriously, only 108,314 in Mexico, whereas the body of the article at Spaniards#People with Spanish ancestry tells us that there are 120 million in Mexico alone.
The article needs to straighten out what the difference is between "Spaniards" and "people with Spanish ancestry" and provide a coherent account. (Does anybody call someone whose ancestors have been in Mexico for five centuries "Spaniards"?) Largoplazo (talk) 16:21, 21 March 2025 (UTC) [reply ]

- I’m suggesting updating the figure for Spanish citizens living abroad using the latest PERE data published today by the INE (Spain’s official statistics authority). The current number is outdated, so it should be replaced with the 2026 update Nobody1824 (talk) 15:50, 19 March 2026 (UTC) [reply ]
