- Not done: it's not clear what changes you want to be made. Please mention the specific changes in a "change X to Y" format and provide a reliable source if appropriate. (3OpenEyes' communication receptacle) | (PS: Have a good day) (acer was here) 15:26, 28 January 2025 (UTC) [reply ]
Schwa in respelling
[edit ]I can see there's a back-and-forth (which I have gotten involved with) about whether the respelling of Seattle in the lead should be see-AT-əl
or see-AT-uhl
. Does the general reader know how to pronounce ə? Sarsenet (talk) 06:27, 6 February 2025 (UTC) [reply ]
- I meant to make a post about this a few days ago when I noticed, as I could tell it might keep going. @Güiseppi669 appears to be justifying changes according to Help:Pronunciation respelling key, which is not policy but consensus. Personally, am not a fan of having schwa be in that key, as it defeats the purpose of having a respelling key, as probably the average reader would have no idea what schwa is. Sure, many do, but that's what the IPA template is for, of course.
- Frankly, I think it should just be
see-ATL
(and the IPA be changed, respectively, to /siˈætl̩/) orsee-A-tl
if we're counting it as three syllables. I don't really hear the schwa when I say it in any instance, since the /l/ is syllabic. It's part of the same syllable as the /t/. I'm not a Seattlite but from the Puget Sound area and my speech is fairly typical for the region, I am not sure if actual Seattlites pronounce it with the schwa. - If we are to include the schwa, though, I think it should probably follow the pronunciation guide, even if I disagree with it. - Those crime rates seem to be based on the population figure for Seattle reported in ofm
.wa .gov /sites /default /files /public /dataresearch /pop /april1 /ofm _april1 _population _final .pdf . Since the Office of Financial Management (OFM) document has the figure easier to find, I will use that to update the article. Peaceray (talk) 18:07, 26 March 2025 (UTC) [reply ] - I reverted the change, as it is generally preferred to use the Census Bureau's annual estimates to remain consistent with other states. The OFM uses a different methodology, so it doesn't always line up. Sounder Bruce 18:45, 26 March 2025 (UTC) [reply ]
