Not synonyms

Opuntia tortispina and Opuntia macrorhiza are not synonymous. They are two separate species. Reputable sources you may consult: https://www.opuntiads.com, a website maintained by cactus taxonomists http://www.theplantlist.org/tpl1.1/search?q=opuntia, a comprehensive list of plant taxonomic groups with synonymy records, maintained by primary botanical authorities The confusion may arise from common names such as "twist-spine prickly pear" that is used for both of these species. Common names are never reliable.
