From what I've seen, it's only in other media (like TV shows and movies) that Mario is an Italian-American from Brooklyn, in American Mario media to be precise. But in Japanese media, he is not portrayed as American at all (the 1986 film and Japanese cartoons). Also, in the Yoshi's Island games, they don't appear to be from Brooklyn either. The way I see it is that like the page previously mentioned, Mario is Italian, but in certain American media, he is an Italian-American from Brooklyn. I wish people would stop arguing about this. It's not worth mentioning at all. It has zero importance to the character. It's not even mentioned in a single video game. Sergecross73 msg me 00:44, 28 April 2026 (UTC) Reply
Mario's nationality is cited from this interview with Miyamoto, who says "Let's put him in New York and he can be Italian. There was really no other deep thought other than that." Any further analysis is original research, period. ThomasO1989 (talk) 00:46, 28 April 2026 (UTC) Reply
People keep editing the article to say that Mario is "Italian" in the games and "Italian-American" in other media, using Miyamoto's quote as a reference, when there is zero indication that Mario's nationality is different depending on the media (as the other user said, Mario's nationality isn't even depicted in the games). Can we just decide on one or the other instead of overcomplicating things by listing both? Italian-American is probably the way to go, given that's how Mario's nationality is depicted when it is depicted, and Miyamoto's quote names both countries, not just Italy. But even just saying Italian is better than listing both for no good reason. This also applies to Luigi, whose article also lists both Italian and Italian-American for some reason.
