"It is also not without significance that the head of at least one other house of Augustinian canons was maliciously accused of being an adherent of Owain Glyn Dŵr. He was John Wellington, prior of Llanthony Prima in the March of Wales, whose Irish lands were seized 'on the suggestion of certain enemies of his'"

General: Article is new enough and long enough
Policy: Article is sourced, neutral, and free of copyright problems

Hook eligibility:

QPQ: None required.

Overall: @Quoting Querying Questioner: Article is new, long enough and scores 3.8% on Copyvio. QPQ not needed. Personally, I don't find the hook that interesting as many people have supported rebel causes over the years, I think there are many better hooks in this article. Welyngton being involved with the blinding of a previous Llanthony prior would make an excellent gruesome hook for example. Or the fact he was excommunicated and pardoned before becoming prior, there is a lot of potential for more interesting hooks here. Spiderpig662 (talk) 00:15, 14 July 2026 (UTC) Reply

I have proposed an amended version of the initial hook. I am reserving the blinding for Draft:Nicholas de Trinbey. Quoting Querying Questioner (talk) 08:30, 14 July 2026 (UTC) Reply
@Quoting Querying Questioner: I still find the amended hook to be not that interesting. I think a hook about his excommunication and pardoning could work as it can be phrased without mentioning the blinding. If you still want to mention Glyndŵr in the hook then maybe you could bulk it up by adding about the seizure of his Irish lands. Spiderpig662 (talk) 16:32, 14 July 2026 (UTC) Reply
@Spiderpig662: Alt2? Quoting Querying Questioner (talk) 08:47, 15 July 2026 (UTC) Reply
@Quoting Querying Questioner: Much better. I am going to adjust the wording slightly to avoid using the word prior twice. What do you think of this:
  • ALT2a ... that John de Welyngton was excommunicated before becoming prior of Llanthony Priory?

If you are happy with it, ALT2a just needs a source then it will be good to go. Spiderpig662 (talk) 16:46, 15 July 2026 (UTC) Reply

I enjoyed the repetition of prior, though your ALT2a is easier to parse.
"It ordered the election of a new prior - with a pension being assigned to Trinley, whilst the miscreants, if found worthy of excommunication by the commissioners, might not be absolved until they had made satisfaction and repaired to the Holy See for absolution - the pope being then at Avignon."
"Meanwhile, Welyngton confessed his guilt . . . He made the required journey to the apostolic see, and there received absolution."

My preference is for ALT2a, but I will approve both ALT2 and ALT2a, and leave it up to the promoter to choose. Spiderpig662 (talk) 00:31, 18 July 2026 (UTC) Reply
