Improvement
[edit ]I can see several areas where this article could be improved.
- Service as United States Minister to Nicaragua (7 April 1855–23 October 1856) given that this was during the time of William Walker seized control of Nicaragua in October 1855. This takeover was recognized by the US government on May 20, 1856. On 22 September 1856 Walker repealed Nicaragua's law abolishing slavery (dating from 1821). Walker lost power on 1 May 1857 (and presumably the repeal was repealed). Note slavery was illegal in Nicaragua when Wheeler planned to take his slaves, Jane Johnson and her two sons, with him to there in July 1855. What was his involvement in Walker's takeover and rule? It also seems the US government may have recalled him because of his actions
- What did he do during the Civil War. One source has him neutral with one son serving in the Confederate Army and another in the US Navy. https://docsouth.unc.edu/nc/wheeler/bio.html What happened to the rest of his slaves?
