Notability concerns

[edit ]

I'm not bold enough to redirect this but I do wonder about notability of this specific person. Wanted to see if anyone else felt simlarly. Depends massively on ensuing media coverage imo. Esolo5002 (talk) 03:14, 6 March 2024 (UTC) [reply ]

I think we should probably wait to see, because I can definitely see him getting more coverage soon. Di (they-them) (talk) 03:19, 6 March 2024 (UTC) [reply ]
I have already seen several reliable and well known sources cover his victory.

For notability, we are looking for sustained coverage, which is not possible to know tonight. If the media continues to cover his win in the coming weeks, like if CNN did a profile on him or something, that would go a long way to establish his notability.. Esolo5002 (talk) 03:32, 6 March 2024 (UTC) [reply ]
Roland Riemers has his own page. Lukt64 (talk) 03:33, 6 March 2024 (UTC) [reply ]
He won a contest, that's ground for notability in my eyes. Scu ba (talk) 04:45, 6 March 2024 (UTC) [reply ]
Not necessarily, WP:BLP1E exists. So far seems to be only about this event, though too early to tell. Astrealix (talk) 04:50, 6 March 2024 (UTC) [reply ]
We have a Politico article about his campaign before American Samoa, so that would be 2 events, and we have reliable, albeit not notable, coverage of his time at microsoft and the gates foundation. Scu ba (talk) 05:31, 6 March 2024 (UTC) [reply ]
Seems like enough to me then. Astrealix (talk) 06:31, 8 March 2024 (UTC) [reply ]
I'd maybe vote keep in an AFD, but barely. It's a pretty unique claim to fame. TulsaPoliticsFan (talk) 06:02, 6 March 2024 (UTC) [reply ]

Quaker by choice or Quaker by birth?

[edit ]

The edit summary for the removal of the words "by choice" is absolutely wrong. Only a small minority of religious affiliations are by choice. Most religious affiliations are by birth. I am not reverting the removal of the words "by choice" because the reference doesn't say that he converted to Quaker by choice. I wasn't able to find anything on Google saying that he converted by choice, so until we find a source that says one way or another (i.e. whether or not his parents were Quakers at the time of his birth) we should leave it unspecified. Up the Walls (talk) 21:27, 8 March 2024 (UTC) [reply ]

Everybody makes the choice to identify as any given religion. Even if you were raised a certain way, it's still a choice to actively identify as the same faith as your parents, and many people change religions as they grow. No independent adult is forced to be Quaker, or Catholic, or Buddhist, or anything like that. Thus, I think that stating that Palmer, an independent adult, chooses to identify as a Quaker is obvious and isn't necessary to state. Di (they-them) (talk) 22:21, 8 March 2024 (UTC) [reply ]
If he was born a Quaker, then he never made a choice to become a Quaker. Under such a scenario, he has been a Quaker his entire life. Call it inertia. But at the moment, this conversation is academic since we do not know whether he was born a Quaker (or his parents converted him into Quaker as a child) or if he chose to be a Quaker as an adult.
If he consciously chose to convert into Quaker, that would definitely be noteworthy. Up the Walls (talk) 23:24, 8 March 2024 (UTC) [reply ]
If Palmer is an adult, his religion is his choice, regardless of how he was raised or born. Being born in a religious family doesn't mean that religion isn't a choice. The only alternative to being "Quaker by choice" would be forced conversion. Di (they-them) (talk) 00:47, 9 March 2024 (UTC) [reply ]
