3,0003,000The Amazon rainforest is home to a vast variety of plants and animals, including: Plants: The Amazon has over 40,000 plant species, including 16,000 tree species. Some notable plants include the coffee plant, which grows best in the shade of the jungle. Other plants have developed defenses to protect themselves from predators, such as tough leaves, resins, or latex outer coats. Animals: The Amazon is home to over 430 mammals, including jaguars, sloths, black spider monkeys, howler monkeys, giant anteaters, and manatees. Other animals include: Birds, such as toucans, hummingbirds, and birds of paradise Reptiles, such as crocodiles, snakes, pythons, anacondas, and boa constrictors Fish, such as the flesh-eating piranha fish Amphibians, such as glass frogs and common basilisks Other life: The Amazon is also home to several million species of insects. The Amazon is one of the world's richest and most-varied biological reservoirs, containing perhaps 30 percent of the world's species.
