The most controversial points of the article are surely these:
- Chief Investigator, Trooper John J. Holtz, was later found to have accepted 50,000ドル from author Joseph Wambaugh for information on the Reinert investigation. The money was provided on the condition that suspect Jay Smith be arrested.
I have found a source for these claims (http://www.pennlive.com/news/laughman/stories/laughman02.html) but:
- it is the only source which describes the payment as conditional upon Smith's arrest;
- most other sources say the amount paid by Wambaugh to Holtz was 45,000,ドル not 50,000ドル. They also note evidence of a payment of 50,000ドル from Wambaugh to Holtz for a similar purpose, explaining how confusion could have occurred.
