I looked for articles relating to Sheppard and found one from 1943 that suggests his real name was James Roberts - https://www.newspapers.com/clip/101957129/the-baltimore-sun/. It mentions many of the other boxers Sheppard fought.

Someone clipped this article from 1949 where his two names are mentioned - https://www.newspapers.com/clip/9443498/income-taxes-say-curtis-sheppard-is/

Whilst it isn't a reliable source, there's a FindAGrave page for him which suggests he was born in Florida in 1920 and died in Philadelphia in 1984 - https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/135567223/james-roberts
