Difference between secret society and honor society
[edit ]Because there has been some confusion between secret and honor societies (see archive), the following is a general guideline:
- Secret Society: Members are not known. Mission and activities are not known. The membership recruitment and selection processes are typically unknown.
- Honor Society: Membership is not a secret. Mission and activities are not secret. However, rituals can be secret or known only to members. Membership often rewards scholarship (subject-specific or general), leadership, and/or various campus activities. The recruitment process is usually announced or public; although the selection process can be secret.

Casque and Gauntlet
[edit ]Casque and Gauntlet at Dartmouth College is a not included in this article because it is a senior society and is not a secret society. Note that its website says "The Casque and Gauntlet...[is] the second-oldest senior society at Dartmouth. Membership is exclusive yet non-secret and co-ed."
