Abortion header seems to lack context
[edit ]As it stands the paragraph reads:
In 2022, Cassidy explained why Louisiana's maternal mortality rate was among the highest in the country by saying "About a third of our population is African American; African Americans have a higher incidence of maternal mortality. So, if you correct our population for race, we’re not as much of an outlier as it’d otherwise appear,"
The quote is truncated as made apparent by the comma, the remainder of the statement is:
"Now, I say that not to minimize the issue but to focus the issue as to where it would be. For whatever reason, people of color have a higher incidence of maternal mortality."
The statement can be found at: https://www.politico.com/news/2022/05/19/why-louisianas-maternal-mortality-rates-are-so-high-00033832 which also indicates a likely driver is the reclassification of maternity death in Louisiana post-2016 as any cause of death within a year of pregnancy. While that point is admittedly tangential to the broader page, it does stand to better contextualize and inform the full statement. The paragraph needs to be edited regardless due to grammatical inconsistency, however as a starting point the following paragraph may serve:
In 2022, Cassidy responded to why Louisiana's maternal mortality rate was among the highest in the country stating "About a third of our population is African American; African Americans have a higher incidence of maternal mortality. So, if you correct our population for race, we’re not as much of an outlier as it’d otherwise appear. Now, I say that not to minimize the issue but to focus the issue as to where it would be. For whatever reason, people of color have a higher incidence of maternal mortality."
Cassidy then attributed the cause to the expansion of maternal mortality reporting in Louisiana following the 2016 recommendation by the CDC and American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists commenting, ""Sometimes maternal mortality includes up to a year after birth and would include someone being killed by her boyfriend. In my mind, it’s better to restrict your definition to that which is the perinatal, if you will — the time just before and in the subsequent period after she has delivered.""
