Talk:Area codes 608 and 353
It is of interest to the following WikiProjects:
Was the 608 area code created from a split or a border rearrangement?
[edit ]The second paragraph of the History section says this area code was "created from a border rearrangement" of the existing area codes. It cites the Notes on Distance Dialing, but that article does not mention any of the relevant area codes or the state (outside an appendix).
The Wikipedia page for area code 414 says 414 was split to create 608, with no mention of a border rearrangement or the other original Wisconsin area code at the time (area code 715). The Wikipedia page for 715 says that the southern Wisconsin NPA, which was 414, was split to create 608. There is also this article from a local Fox website that says 608 was created from a split off of 414.
Was area code 608 created from a border rearrangement or a split of area code 414 only? Can anyone help clarify this discrepancy with additional sources? Thank you

- There is no discrepancy. All area code splits are obviously just border rearrangements. In this case, if I remember correctly, more than one parent NPA got rearranged–not a simple split. To talk about splits this early in the history of the NANP is somewhat misleading anyways, because in many instances there was no prior functional NPA, just hollow area allocations labeled with an area code. Naturally, when actual toll routing to the regional class 4 switch was provisioned, they found that some previous assignments could not be implemented or were too expensive, and such exchange areas were moved to another NPA. This only looked like a split in hindsight. kbrose (talk) 16:37, 29 December 2025 (UTC) [reply ]
- I believe, the dating of the creation of 608 comes from inspection of the area code maps in 1955 and 1956. In 1955, the state was shown only with the two original area codes. This rearrangement coincides with the installation of the first No 4A Crossbar toll machine in Milwaukee in May 1955, operating in Class 3 service, so likely was also serving 715 and 608. I don't see a record of any other toll machine installed in the state until the 1970s. kbrose (talk) 22:20, 29 December 2025 (UTC) [reply ]
