Akihabara massacre → 2008 Akihabara massacre 2008 Akihabara massacre – Per current naming convention on events (WP:NCEVENTS), adding a when before the where and what is desirable in a majority of cases. I don't see a reason to make an exception for this article. This would also align the article title with other naming convention-compliant Tokyo-related attacks, such as 1974 Mitsubishi Heavy Industries bombing, 2019 Tokyo car attack, and October 2021 Tokyo attack, making this article title WP:CONSISTENT with similar ones and with the List of vehicle-ramming attacks. Hikikomori?

"Based on Katō's messages, commentators referred to the incident as another case of Japan's hikikomori becoming more violent and suicidal."

This sentence from the article seems wrong to me. Katō was a obviously not a hikikomori - he had a steady job outside his home, for instance. The articles cited as support do not say that he was a hikikomori either, they just cite this case in a more global discussion of the impact of social isolation on violence or suicide. This sentence could be changed to something like "as another case of a lonely person in Japan becoming more violent and suicidal." But then, this is already expressed in the rest of the article and hardly necessary to repeat with three sources here. Should we just remove that sentence? 2008 Akihabara massacre → Akihabara massacre – Why: Adding a year violates WP:NOYEAR as it can be described easily without it. Previous move seemed to be off of a trend of adding years, while neglecting this: when, in historic perspective, the event is easily described without it. Though it is a judgement call for others. The Akihabara massacre was a huge case in Japan, and was one of the few incidents of mass murder recorded in the internet age of Japan. It was a shock to many, since Japan is usually seen as a peaceful country and cases like these shock the country. It can be described easily without the year due to the impact it had. It cna be argued thought it has a year in it when you look it up but the other half describes it without the year in the title. Support Calling it just "Akihabara massacre" would be consistent with other recent massacres in Japan (some links are to ja.wiki in there, so caution is warranted), year appears to be used when the place in the title is somewhere like Tokyo. Paris1127 (talk) 15:30, 6 June 2026 (UTC) Reply
It seems like all of those are out of sync with the wider project. Japan shouldn't have its own convention, when the wider convention is governed by WP:NCWWW. See List of massacres in Great Britain where most recent ones have years. — Amakuru (talk) 15:43, 6 June 2026 (UTC) Reply
Strong support as it was the only mass killing in akhiabara.I am not sure why so many of these have years like the Abundant Life Christian School shooting was somehow added a year despite there only being one shooting at the school and that doesn't make sense how year is needed.   • Support because the event appears to have been one of the most shocking crimes in modern Japan and there appears to have been a tremendous impact on Japanese society as well based on my reading of the Japanese version of this article. The crime resulted in restrictions on bladed weapons, bans on the sales of daggers online, a crack down on threats of violence, a positive reaction from certain corners of the Japanese internet to the perpetrator's actions, and it being a main inspiration for other attacks in a historically low-crime nation, such as an attack at a Mazda office.
