Stampede?

[edit ]

Some sources are calling this a stampede:

While breaking news often incorrectly refer to crowd crushes as stampedes, these sources at least mention people being stepped upon. Let see if later sources resolve this. —Bagumba (talk) 10:44, 29 January 2025 (UTC) [reply ]

I believe that the term stampede is much more accurate as virtually all national and international outlets are using the term. Some examples:

https://www.dw.com/en/india-kumbh-mela-stampede-deaths/a-71440359
https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/2025/01/29/india-stampede-kumbh-mela-modi/ Withmoralcare (talk) 03:47, 30 January 2025 (UTC) [reply ]
Crowd crush should be used not stampede there were lot of administrative lapses to say stampede would mean people are to be blamed. DataCrusade1999 (talk) 06:33, 30 January 2025 (UTC) [reply ]
Hmm,I understand. If those are the definitions you are working with, I agree with you. I was only wary of any potential attempts to dilute the facts.
Thank you for the clarification. Withmoralcare (talk) 11:52, 30 January 2025 (UTC) [reply ]
Ok, so could you please seek administrator attention to restore the article to the title it had before you moved it? Perhaps at WP:RMTR? Einsof (talk) 14:08, 30 January 2025 (UTC) [reply ]
Currently, the page is titled stampede while the lead sentence says "crowd crush".[1] This needs to be consistent, one way or another. —Bagumba (talk) 18:21, 30 January 2025 (UTC) [reply ]
I have seen the word stampede being used even with crowd collapse and crowd crush. This example comes to mind:
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/2015_Mina_stampede
Perhaps this is done for the sake of convenience in terms of searching as people generally use "stampede" as an umbrella term. Precision is valuable, but one of Wikipedia's primary goals, I think, is also to provide information in an accessible manner. Withmoralcare (talk) 21:38, 30 January 2025 (UTC) [reply ]
They're quite different. A stampede is fast panicked movement. A crowd crush is overcrowded with little actual movement, often leading to suffocation.—Bagumba (talk) 05:27, 31 January 2025 (UTC) [reply ]
Thanks for the clarification! Although, It raises the question of whether past Kumbh Mela incidents, often described as stampedes, were also crowd crushes? Sh3rlock (talk) 18:56, 12 February 2025 (UTC) [reply ]

It seems the page has been re-titled to crowd crush. This 30 Jan article from The Guardian seems to support it:[2]

Those stuck in the swelling press of bodies described sudden surges that pushed people to the ground, where they were trodden beneath thousands of feet, and many found themselves unable to get back up. Families sitting on the floor, many with small children fast asleep, were separated or crushed beneath the surging mass.

Bagumba (talk) 05:47, 31 January 2025 (UTC) [reply ]

The infobox still has stampede written in it. DataCrusade1999 (talk) 08:21, 31 January 2025 (UTC) [reply ]

Why is this incident not mentioned in the "in the news" section?

[edit ]

This crowd crush took the lives of over 30 people, is a current event, and happened during an event which is the largest gathering of people in the world and will see 400 million people in attendance. 92.206.69.54 (talk) 15:06, 5 February 2025 (UTC) [reply ]

UP CM acknowledged suppressing information about the incident
