Shri Govind Guru University was established by Government of Gujarat vide Gujarat Act No. 24/2015. It is a state University under Gujarat Public University Act 2023. The headquarter of the University is in Godhra, Panchmahals. The Jurisdiction of the University is spread over 5 districts of Gujarat State i.e. Panchmahals, Dahod, Mahisagar, Chhota Udepur, and Vadodara (Rural). All the colleges/institutions situated in the jurisdiction are affiliated with this university. At present, 286 colleges are affiliated with the University (December 2024).

In the year 2024-25, the University has received more than 41,220 undergraduate and postgraduate admissions applications through the GCAS portal. At present, more than 1,25,000 students are studying in the university. In a short period of 9 years, more than 108 students have successfully completed their research work and received their Ph.D. degrees. Currently, more than 1,176 Ph.D. students are carrying out research work in more than 20 courses.

The state-of-the-art new administrative building of the University was inaugurated by the Hon'ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi in the year 2022 at Vinzol, Godhra. The Administrative building of the university has recently been awarded Green Building status by the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC). It is the first state University of Gujarat to achieve the Green Building Certification from amongst the other state universities of Gujarat.
