Rukmini Vasanth is an Indian actress who predominantly works in Kannada films. Following her debut with Birbal Trilogy Case 1: Finding Vajramuni (2019), Rukmini received critical acclaim for the 2023 romantic drama Sapta Saagaradaache Ello – Side A and Sapta Saagaradaache Ello – Side B , winning Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actress – Kannada for them.[1]
Early life
[edit ]Rukmini was born in Bangalore. Her father, Colonel Vasanth Venugopal,[2] is Karnataka's first recipient of India's highest peacetime military decoration, the Ashoka Chakra.[3] He was killed in action in 2007 while preventing heavily armed infiltrators from crossing the India-Pakistan border at Uri, Jammu and Kashmir.[4] Her mother, Subhashini Vasanth, is an accomplished Bharatanatyam dancer who has set up a foundation to support war widows in Karnataka.[5]
Rukmini was educated at Army School, Air Force School and Centre for Learning. She obtained an acting degree from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in Bloomsbury, London.[6] [7]
Career
[edit ]Rukmini made her debut with the 2019 Kannada film Birbal Trilogy opposite M. G. Srinivas.[8] The same year she also acted in the Hindi film Upstarts .[9]
Rukmini played Priya opposite Rakshit Shetty, in the 2023 films, Sapta Saagaradaache Ello – Side A and Sapta Saagaradaache Ello – Side B which found commercial success.[10] A Sharadhaa of The New Indian Express noted, "Rukmini effortlessly emerges as the luminary, and she doles out a remarkable performance as Priya,"[11] [12] The same year, she appeared opposite Ganesh, in Baanadariyalli .[13]
In 2024, Rukmini appeared in two successful Kannada films: Bagheera opposite Sriimurali,[14] [15] and Bhairathi Ranagal opposite Shiva Rajkumar.[16] She also made her Telugu film debut with Appudo Ippudo Eppudo opposite Nikhil Siddhartha.[17]
