The function "data.cof.checkDate" should return early if access-date is not set.

Reasoning: The current behaviour of the module in this case is to fail, which breaks a number of articles using Template:Catalog of Fishes. Examples include Acanthonus, Alphonse Guichenot, and Arctic char. If not setting access-date is an incorrect use of the template, then it should be expressed in the form of a template error.

I fixed that problem. There is at least one other place where Module:Date is used and where the result should be tested to see if it is nil. There are some style issues that I could fix if wanted, starting with the trivial issue of trailing space and use of tabs for indents. Johnuniq (talk) 05:12, 26 October 2025 (UTC) Reply

@Jts1882, currently there are some pages matching Special:Search/"Error: unrecognised source", for instance, yet the text is not visibly formatted as an error message, nor is there any tracking category for these errors. Module:Citation/CS1 and submodules create a red text for missing parameters, for instance, so I would expect other citation templates to do something similar. 1234qwer 1234qwer 4 23:20, 19 May 2026 (UTC) Reply

You are correct, the errors need formatting. I actually thought I had begun colour coding the error messages, but that must have been a different module.
