Matthew Paul Breetzke (born 3 November 1998) is a South African cricketer.[1] He became the first cricketer to hit a 150 on his Odi debut and then in his 2nd match he hit more then 80 runs.
Domestic career
[edit ]He made his first-class debut for Eastern Province in the 2016–17 Sunfoil 3-Day Cup on 9 February 2017[2] and his List A debut in the 2016–17 CSA Provincial One-Day Challenge on 12 February.[3] He made his Twenty20 debut in the 2017 Africa T20 Cup on 1 September the same year.[4]
In December 2017, he was named in South Africa's squad for the 2018 Under-19 Cricket World Cup.[5] In July 2018, he was named in the Cricket South Africa Emerging Squad[6] and in September 2018, was named in Eastern Province's squad for the 2018 Africa T20 Cup.[7] In September 2019, he was named in the squad for the Nelson Mandela Bay Giants team for the 2019 Mzansi Super League tournament.[8]
In April 2021, Breetzke was named in the South Africa Emerging Men's squad for their six-match tour of Namibia.[9] Later the same month, he was named in Eastern Province's squad, ahead of the 2021–22 cricket season in South Africa.[10]
International career
[edit ]On 5 February 2025, Breetzke was named in the squad for the Tri-Series in Pakistan.[11] He made his One Day International debut on 10 February 2025 against New Zealand during the Tri-Series in Pakistan and scored a century on his debut.[12] He also converted his maiden ODI hundred on his debut ODI to a score of 150 and during the process, he shattered the previous record score of 148 held by West Indies's stalwart Desmond Haynes (who did it in 1978 against Australia) for the highest individual score by a batsman on men's ODI debut.[13] [14] [15] He also eventually became the first batsman in the world to score 150 on ODI debut.[16] [17] During his second ODI appearance against Pakistan on 12 February 2025, he carried from where he left off and scored a fluent knock of 83 and set a new record for having accumulated the most number of runs by any batsman after his first two ODI innings since debut with a record tally of 233 runs.[18] He also became the first batsman in ODI history to have completed 200 runs in just his second ODI innings.
