Hosadurga is a town and a taluk in Chitradurga district in the Indian state of Karnataka.

Geography

Hosadurga is located in south-western part of Chitradurga district,[4] at an average elevation of 739 metres (2,425 ft) above the mean sea level. Vedavathi River flows 7 km south of the town.

It is located 66 km from the district capital Chitradurga, 94 km from nearest major city, Shimoga (via Tarikere ) and 215 km from state capital city, Bangalore.

Major highways passing through Hosadurga are; National Highway 173 (India), State Highway 24 (Karnataka) and State Highway 47 (Karnataka).

Demographics

As of the 2011 India census,[5] Hosadurga has a population of 28,370. Males constitute 52% of the population and females 48%. Hosadurga has an average literacy rate of 72%, higher than the national average of 59.5%, with a male literacy rate of 76% and a female literacy rate of 70%. In Hosadurga, 12% of the population is under seven years of age.

Industries

Hosadurga had a strong cement industry in the 1990s, but many factories have closed over time due to shortages of limestone. Currently only one remains, the Ramco Cement Factory in Mathodu Village. [6]

Transport

Hosadurga is connected by Road and Rail network. Public transport is maintained by both private players and KSRTC, who has a Bus Stand and a bus depot here, under Chitradurga division. Hosadurga Road railway station (Station Code:HSD) is the nearest railway station, which is 20 km away. It lies on Bangalore-Arsikere-Hubli line. The nearest airport is Shivamogga Airport, which is 97 km away.
