Zangar Nurlanuly (born 4 July 2008) is a Kazakhstani tennis player. He reached the boys' singles semifinals at the 2025 US Open and the 2026 Australian Open, becoming the first Kazakhstani player to reach the boys' singles semifinals at the US Open.[1] He has a career-high ATP singles ranking of world No. 1625, achieved on 30 March 2026.[2]
Early life
[edit ]Nurlanuly was born in Almaty, Kazakhstan, on 4 July 2008. He began playing tennis as a child after accompanying his father, an amateur tennis player, to the court.[3]
He later moved his training base to Slovakia, where he trained under coach Alexander Somogyi.[3]
Junior career
[edit ]Nurlanuly represented Kazakhstan in international junior team competitions. At the 2022 ITF World Junior Tennis Finals, he helped Kazakhstan advance from the group stage to the quarterfinals. He secured the decisive point against Italy by defeating Antonio Marigliano in three sets.[4]
In 2022, Nurlanuly also competed successfully on the Tennis Europe Junior Tour. He was named Tennis Europe Overseas Player of the Year for boys after finishing the season as the highest-ranked non-European player in the boys' 14-and-under rankings, at world No. 9 in the year-end standings.[5]
2025: US Open semifinal
[edit ]Nurlanuly competed in all four junior Grand Slam tournaments in 2025. At the US Open, he defeated 12th seed Alan Ważny to reach the third round of a junior Grand Slam for the first time.[3] He continued his run by defeating Oskari Paldanius and Timofei Derepasko to reach the semifinals.
The result made him the first Kazakhstani player to reach the boys' singles semifinals at the US Open.[6] He was defeated by eventual champion Ivan Ivanov in the semifinals.[7]
2026: Australian Open semifinal
[edit ]At the 2026 Australian Open Junior Championships, Nurlanuly reached the quarterfinals after defeating Savva Rybkin in the third round. At the time, he held a career-high ITF junior ranking of No. 12.[8]
He subsequently advanced to the semifinals, where he lost to Keaton Hance. His run made him the first Kazakhstani player to reach the boys' singles semifinals at the Australian Open.[9]
Later in the season, Nurlanuly reached the third round of the boys' singles events at both the French Open and Wimbledon.[10]
Playing style
[edit ]Nurlanuly plays an aggressive baseline game. His serve has also been noted as one of the strengths of his game; during the 2026 Australian Open Junior Championships, the ITF reported that his serve reached 205 km/h.[11]
