Todd Levon Brown (born March 3, 1982) is an American environmental psychologist and assistant professor of psychology at the Fashion Institute of Technology [1] in New York City. As an interdisciplinary environmental scholar, Brown bridges the fields of environmental psychology, architecture, sociology, urban studies, planning, public health, environmental science, and education to inform his research and practice.[1] [2]

Early life and education

[edit ]

Brown was born in Chicago, IL in the Cabrini Green Housing projects.[3] When he was 6 years old, Brown's mother, Deloris, decided to enroll him in a homeschool program through Christian Liberty Academy. Brown attended this program from first, to twelfth grades,[4] graduating in 2001,

Afterwards, Brown attended the University of Illinois at Chicago, majoring in architectural studies.[4] During his junior year in architecture school, Brown enrolled in an environmental design which " got [him] highly interested in sustainable architecture".[4] Looking to gain better training in the technical aspects of sustainability and to understand the link between architecture and human health, Brown pursued a Master of Public Health in environmental and occupational health sciences, also at UIC. During his studies in the program, Brown became exposed to the concepts of environmental racism and environmental justice in the built environment.[4] Upon completion of public health school in 2007,[5] Brown remained at UIC, returning to the school of architecture to pursue the Master of Architecture degree, with goals of becoming a registered architect.[4] While in architectural graduate school, Brown states that he became "disenchanted with the prospect of becoming an architect", primarily because of his perception "that that the field did not prioritize racial and many other social considerations in its design philosophy".[4]

After receiving his M.Arch degree in 2010, Brown moved to New York City for his doctoral studies in environmental psychology at the CUNY Graduate Center [4] [5] .[6] During his PhD program, Brown studied under architect and environmental psychologist, David Chapin[7] .[5] [8] Brown's research focused primarily on the "psychosocial, socioracial, and sociospatial issues centered in human-environment relationships with a specific focus on architecture and the built environment."[4] His dissertation critically addressed perceptions and experiences of design spaces and is entitled: "Environmental Cues and the Sociospatial Imaginary: An Examination of Spatial Perception and Meaning-Making in a Gentrifying Neighborhood[9] ".[6] [10] He completed his PhD in 2021.[3] [6]

Teaching and research

[edit ]

After receiving his doctorate, Brown moved to Austin, TX for a 2-year fellowship at the University of Texas School of Architecture (UTSOA).[11] While there he served as the sixth and final Race and Gender in the Built Environment Fellow[12] [4] [13] [14] [15] During his tenure, Brown taught transdisciplinary design studio workshops on socioracial sustainability and inclusion within architecture and urban design and a university-wide graduate seminar course on racialized urban landscapes.[4] [5] [6] [11] [13]

After his fellowship, Brown became a recipient of a 2023-24 research fellowship and grant from the National Institute of Health's AIM-AHEAD program where his research utilized artificial intelligence and machine learning to explore the environmental and socioracial determinants of stress and cardiometabolic health outcomes of transgender and gender-diverse individuals.[1] [2] [16]

In 2024, Brown was appointed as full-time psychology faculty at the Fashion Institute of Technology, where he had previously taught periodically as an adjunct. Additionally, Brown has had a long-standing relationship with Columbia University's Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation. Since 2015, Brown has served in various capacities at the school, including visiting architectural juror, symposium speaker,[17] roving critic, and adjunct faculty.[2]
