Signal Space is a permanent immersive digital and transmedia art gallery located at Rytířská 10 in Prague 1, Czech Republic. Opened on 1 October 2025, it is housed in a historic Neo-Renaissance market hall built in 1896 and spans approximately 2,500 square metres.[1] Signal Space is the first permanent gallery of its kind in the Czech Republic and one of the largest immersive digital art venues in Central Europe.[2] It was founded by Martin Pošta, the producer and curator who also co-founded the annual Signal Festival, and is operated by Signal Playground.
Background
[edit ]Signal Festival is Prague's annual festival of light and digital art, first held in October 2013. The festival was conceived by producer Martin Pošta, curator Jan Rolník, and artist Amar Mulabegovic of the artist group The Macula, following a large-scale video mapping created in 2010 to mark the 600th anniversary of the Prague Astronomical Clock. The inaugural festival attracted approximately 250,000 visitors.
Following the sustained international success of Signal Festival, Martin Pošta and his team developed the concept of a year-round permanent venue that would bring immersive digital art to audiences beyond the annual festival format. Signal Space was announced in September 2025 and opened to the public on 1 October 2025.[3]
Venue
[edit ]Signal Space occupies a historic iron-and-glass market hall in the centre of Prague, a short walk from the Můstek metro station. The building, dating from 1896, provides approximately 2,500 square metres of usable floor space, of which roughly 1,000 to 1,200 square metres are dedicated to gallery and exhibition areas.[4]
The venue is divided into several distinct zones:
- Immersive Room (approx. 300 m2) — a large-format 360-degree projection hall, the largest such projection space in the Czech Republic
- Banka (approx. 188 m2) — a multi-purpose projection and installation space
- Kinetic Room (approx. 102 m2) — dedicated to generative and kinetic art installations
- Infinity Room (approx. 45 m2) — a mirror and light environment developed in collaboration with Preciosa Lighting, featuring 180 hand-cut crystal cubes[5]
- Cinema Room (approx. 95 m2) — an audiovisual projection space
- Interactive Room (approx. 61 m2) — motion- and touch-based interactive installations
- Studio Room (approx. 61 m2) — a space for site-specific commissions
- CzechBox (approx. 123 m2) — a free-access rotating showcase for emerging Czech artists
- Playground (approx. 267 m2) — interactive zones for visitors of all ages
- Foyer, Space Break café, and Space Objects gift shop — collectively spanning approximately 750 m2
The venue operates on a timed-entry ticketing system with a daily capacity of up to 1,600 visitors.
Exhibitions
[edit ]Echoes of Tomorrow (2025–2026)
[edit ]The inaugural exhibition, Echoes of Tomorrow, opened alongside the gallery on 1 October 2025. The exhibition brought together works by internationally recognised digital and media artists, exploring themes of futurity, perception, science, and the relationship between technology and nature.[6] [7]
Featured works included:
- Everything by Istanbul-based studio Nohlab — an immersive audiovisual environment occupying the main projection hall, merging scientific data, philosophy, and spatial sound into a continuous 360-degree experience
- intangible #form by Japanese artist Shohei Fujimoto — a laser installation composed of 258 laser beams that construct an architecture of intangible light, originally exhibited at Signal Festival where it became one of the most visited installations in the festival's history
- Body Sketches by American creative coder Zach Lieberman — an interactive piece in which visitors' movements are translated in real time into digital drawings
- Infinity Room — a spatial installation developed with Preciosa Lighting, in which mirrors and 180 hand-cut crystal cubes create the illusion of infinite space[8]
Originally planned to run until early 2026, Echoes of Tomorrow was extended due to audience demand through September 2026.[9]
Visitorship and public reception
[edit ]By March 2026 — approximately six months after opening — Signal Space had welcomed more than 70,000 visitors.[10] The gallery is listed among recommended cultural attractions by Prague City Tourism.[11]
Awards and recognition
[edit ]Signal Space received the InAVation Award 2026 for Project of the Year, selected from a global shortlist that included teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi (UAE) and the Sherwood Observatory Planetarium (UK).[12] The InAVation Awards are regarded as the leading international honours in the field of audiovisual technologies and immersive installations.
In 2026, Signal Space also received the Prix Numix , a Canadian international award recognising excellence in digital and interactive creation, making it one of the few European immersive venues to receive this distinction.
Organisation
[edit ]Signal Space is part of Signal, a Prague-based cultural organisation that also operates Signal Festival and Signal Creative. The group was founded by Martin Pošta, who serves as CEO across all three entities.
Off-programme activities
[edit ]In addition to its permanent gallery programme, Signal Space hosts complementary events under the Signal brand, including Signal Sounds (monthly music and audiovisual evenings), Signal Movement (morning yoga and movement sessions held within the gallery spaces). The venue also accommodates private and corporate events outside public opening hours.
