Shree Ram Temple (locally referred to as the "Ayodhya of Odisha") is a Hindu temple located in Fategarh village, under the Bhapur block of the Nayagarh district in Odisha, India. Dedicated to Lord Ram, Mata Sita, and Lord Lakshman, the temple is situated atop the Giri Govardhan hill at an altitude of approximately 1,632 feet (497 m) above sea level. It was inaugurated on 22 January 2024, coinciding with the Pran Pratishtha of the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya.
History and Significance
[edit ]The hilltop of Giri Govardhan historically served as a traditional Bhagabata Pitha. For generations, the residents of Fategarh worshipped Lord Govardhan on the hill, particularly to pray for rain during periods of drought.[1]
The surrounding forest holds profound historical and spiritual significance in Odisha's culture. In 1912, during the Nabakalebara ritual of the Jagannath Temple in Puri, the sacred Neem tree (Daru) used to carve the idol of Lord Sudarshan was identified and collected from the Fategarh forest.[2]
Initial efforts to build a dedicated temple on the hill were led by a local resident, Chakradhar Pradhan. The initiative gained momentum when the villagers formally established the Shri Ram Seva Parishad to oversee the planning, funding, and execution of the temple's construction.
Architecture and Construction
[edit ]Formal construction of the temple began in 2017 and involved a workforce of around 150 artisans and laborers working over a span of seven years. The total cost of the project exceeded ₹10 crore. The construction was primarily crowdfunded; the 15,000 residents of Fategarh contributed approximately half of the total amount, with the remainder collected from well-wishers across the state.[3]
The temple is built in the traditional Odishan (Kalinga) architectural style, heavily inspired by the Maa Tara Tarini Temple in Ganjam. It is constructed entirely out of 'Baulamala' stone to allow for intricate carvings. The main structural dimensions are:
- Rekha (The main peak/Vimana): 65 feet tall.
- Bhadra (The middle structure): 35 feet tall.
- Mohan (The frontal structure): 25 feet tall.[1]
Deities and Worship
[edit ]The principal deities of the temple are Lord Ram, Mata Sita, and Lord Lakshman. The temple complex also houses shrines dedicated to Surya Narayan, Ganesha, Chandrasekhar, Lord Hanuman, and Giri Govardhan.
The temple actively celebrates major Hindu festivals, with Rama Navami being the most prominent. During Rama Navami, the temple makes special arrangements to accommodate thousands of devotees for darshan and the distribution of prasad.
Inauguration
[edit ]The temple was officially inaugurated on 22 January 2024, deliberately aligned with the consecration ceremony of the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya. Pre-inauguration rituals began on 18 January 2024 with a Kalash Yatra, where local women fetched sacred water from the Mahanadi river. The event was attended by thousands of devotees and spiritual leaders, with formal invitations extended to the Shankaracharya of Puri Govardhan Peeth, Swami Nischalananda Saraswati, and Gajapati Maharaja Dibyasingha Deb.[3]
Location and Accessibility
[edit ]The Shree Ram Temple is located approximately 40 km from Nayagarh town and 65 km from the state capital, Bhubaneswar. The temple is accessible via multiple transportation routes:
- By Road: A 1 km motorable road connects the base of Giri Govardhan hill to the temple summit, featuring parking facilities at both the top and bottom. The nearest local bus stop is in Fategarh (1.8 km).
- By Rail: The nearest railway station is Begunia, located 25 km from the temple.[1]
- By Air: The nearest airport is Biju Patnaik International Airport in Bhubaneswar, approximately 62 km away.
