Muhammad Lutfi was born on 16 August 1969, in Jakarta, Indonesia. He is the son of Firdaus Wadjdi, who is of Minangkabau descent, and Suhartini, who hails from Kebumen, Central Java.^[1] After completing his early education in Indonesia, Lutfi moved to the United States to attend Purdue University in Indiana, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree.

Upon completing his education, Lutfi embarked on a career in business. He co-founded the Mahaka Group alongside Erick Thohir, Wishnu Wardhana, and Harry Zulnardy. The Mahaka Group is a prominent Indonesian holding company with interests in the mining, finance, and media sectors.^[2] During his time at the company, Lutfi served as its President Director and CEO. In addition to his corporate leadership, Lutfi became heavily involved in national business associations. At the age of 29, he was elected Chairman of the Indonesian Young Entrepreneurs Association (HIPMI) for the Greater Jakarta area (HIPMI JAYA), serving from 1998 to 2001. He subsequently became the National Chairman of HIPMI, a position he held from 2001 to 2004. He is also one of the co-founders of the Indonesian Sharia Economic Community (Masyarakat Ekonomi Syariah).

Lutfi transitioned into public service in 2005 when he was appointed by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono as the Chairman of the Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) of Indonesia. Serving from May 2005 to November 2009, he was the youngest person ever to hold this cabinet-level position. In 2008, his achievements were recognized internationally when the World Economic Forum named him a Young Global Leader. In August 2010, President Yudhoyono appointed Lutfi as the Ambassador of the Republic of Indonesia to Japan and the Federated States of Micronesia.^[3] He was the youngest person to ever serve at the Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo—Indonesia's largest diplomatic mission—and one of the youngest ambassadors representing Indonesia on the global stage. On 12 February 2014, President Yudhoyono announced Lutfi's appointment as the Minister of Trade for the Second United Indonesia Cabinet, succeeding Gita Wirjawan.^[4] He was officially sworn in on 14 February 2014, and served until the end of the presidential administration in October 2014. During the administration of President Joko Widodo, Lutfi returned to diplomatic service and was sworn in as the Indonesian Ambassador to the United States on 14 September 2020. However, his tenure in Washington, D.C. was brief; on 22 December 2020, President Widodo announced a cabinet reshuffle and appointed Lutfi as the Minister of Trade for the Onward Indonesia Cabinet, replacing Agus Suparmanto.^[5] Lutfi was officially sworn in the following day, 23 December 2020, and served in the role until 15 June 2022, when he was succeeded by Zulkifli Hasan.

Muhammad Lutfi is married to Bianca Adinegoro. The couple wed in 2004 and have one child together.
