The business was founded in Belfast, and in 2018, Mahlatini expanded its operations and opened its Cape Town office.[4] Co-founder Greg Fox, who is originally from South Africa[5] and a descendant of the African explorer, Charles John Andersson[6] , leads the company's South African operations.

In July 2024, Mahlatini became a certified B Corporation by B Lab.[17] The certification process, including challenges associated with applying assessment criteria designed around Western economies to operations and supply chains in developing countries, was covered by TTG Luxury.[18]
The company is a signatory to Business in the Community's Climate Action Pledge, having committed to reducing its greenhouse-gas emissions by 50% by 2030.[19]
Mahlatini has maintained a corporate partnership with Save the Rhino International since 2013.[20]
